  4.     DIED. Lucy S. Dawidowicz, 75, chronicler and scholar of
  5. Jewish life and history; in New York City. Born and educated in
  6. New York, Dawidowicz traveled to Poland in the late 1930s, where
  7. she observed the escalating horror of Euorpean anti-Semitism. She
  8. recorded these experiences in From That Place and Time, a memoir
  9. published last year. Her writings on the Holocaust, including The
  10. War Against the Jews, 1933-1945 and The Holocaust and the
  11. Historians, pitted her against such commentators as Hannah Arendt
  12. and Bruno Bettelheim, who argued that the Jews could have done
  13. more to save themselves from the Nazis.
